Managing
Stress in the 21st Century
Stress
is a part of life in the 21st century. The multi-tasking demands
of our fast-paced lives can be very stressful. Technological advances
such as email and cell phones are convenient, but they can make
it hard to find moments of uninterrupted peace and quiet. Try these
suggestions to keep your stress under control:
- Begin
each day with breakfast.
- Use
your time wisely. Avoid procrastination and over-scheduling.
- Allow
extra time for the “unexpected.”
- Watch
for caffeine overload. Too much caffeine can increase feelings
of stress and anxiety and make it hard to concentrate.
- Take
brief relaxation breaks throughout the day – try deep breathing
and stretching often.
- Schedule
time for regular exercise and the activities you enjoy.
- Get
plenty of rest. You perform better when your brain is rested and
clear.
- Keep
things in perspective. Don’t dwell on your mistakes. Focus
on the things you do “right.”
- Give
yourself permission to “turn off” your electronic
devices once in a while.
- Check
your anxiety level to see if negative thoughts and worries are
distracting you. Constant worrying can drain your mind and body
of energy and it is a waste of your precious time.
- You
can decrease worrying when you re-direct your attention to a positive
thought or image or stay focused on the present moment rather
than the future or the past.
