SIX TIPS TO FIGHT OFFICE STRESS IN 2006

  1. Prioritize your workload on a daily basis to effectively tackle the most important or time-sensitive items.

    • If you receive additional assignments during the day, take the time to figure out where they fall in your list of priorities before diverting your attention to this new task.

  2. Set realistic and achievable goals.

    • If your job goals seem vague or unrealistic, set up an appointment with your manager to define more achievable objectives.

  3. Focus on one task at a time to work more quickly and efficiently.

    • Avoid constantly juggling various tasks by setting a daily schedule for routine activities. For example, set aside designated times to check emails and phone messages, rather than interrupting what you are doing to handle faxes, emails and phone calls. You’ll not only gain a larger block of uninterrupted time to complete your work, but you will also give yourself time to think through requests and messages before responding.

  4. Take breaks.

    • Even during busy times it is important to walk around and stretch your muscles. This will give your mind and body a rest, while helping to improve your ability to absorb everything that has happened during the day.

  5. Concentrate on your own work and on improving yourself--rather than competing with others.

    • If a co-worker tends to interrupt or tries to compete with you, send signals that you are not available. Shut your office door or--if you work in an open office or cubicle--put on headphones or position your body so that your back is to the cubicle opening.
    • Keep criticism and feedback from co-workers and bosses in perspective. Instead of feeling hurt and resentful, think about their motives and evaluate what was said before reacting or letting it affect you emotionally.

  6. Save a bit of time at the end of the day to organize your work area and prepare for the next day.

    • This will help you transition out of work mode and make it easier to focus and be productive when you return the next day.
